Inscriptions: Names Carved in Stone, Memories Carried Forward

An inscription is more than a name on a stone. It is a lasting reminder of a life lived, a family loved, and a legacy passed from one generation to the next.

Each granite faceplate identifies those resting within the niche and creates a permanent place for remembrance. Children, grandchildren, and future generations can return to the same spot, read the same names, and feel connected to their family's story.

In a world where so much changes, an inscription endures. It transforms a niche into a family gathering place—a place of reflection, gratitude, and remembrance for years to come.

For many families, the inscription becomes the most visible expression of their legacy: simple, dignified, and lasting.

Walker Chapel Historic Cemetery and Columbarium Inscriptions
Can both names be engraved on a companion niche when only one urn has been placed?

Yes. Most families choose to have both names and their favorite saying engraved when the niche is first installed, and the dates are added once the individual has passed to eternal care.

May a family niche include multiple names?

Yes. Family niches are designed to accommodate multiple urns, and the inscription plan can be arranged to reflect the family members who will ultimately be remembered there.  It requires pre-planning to make sure all names fit.

Why are inscriptions standardized?

Uniform inscriptions create a harmonious appearance throughout the Columbarium and ensure that every family is honored with equal dignity and respect.

Who arranges for the inscription?

The Cemetery coordinates the engraving process and works with the family to ensure the inscription is accurate before it is carved.

May I include a symbol or special wording?

In many cases, yes. Available options depend on the niche type and available space.

How long will the inscription last?

The inscriptions are carved deep into durable granite designed to withstand weather and remain legible for generations with proper care.

Can I see examples of existing inscriptions?

Yes. Visitors are welcome to view the occupied niches in the Columbarium to see examples of the consistent style and craftsmanship used throughout.  You can also visit the selection page and click on any inscription panel to see the inscription.

What if I am pre-planning and do not yet know what wording I want?

That is perfectly normal. Many families reserve a niche first and make decisions about inscriptions later, often with guidance from family members and loved ones.

Why is the inscription so important?

Because names matter. An inscription preserves a person's identity in a permanent place. Long after those who knew them personally are gone, future generations can read their name, remember their story, and know that they were part of a family's journey. That simple act of remembrance is one of the greatest gifts a legacy can provide.
