Built to Last
The Columbarium was built with permanence in mind. While no contractor can promise a structure will last for centuries, the goal was simple: build it as strong and enduring as possible.
The three columbaria rest upon a massive gravity wall, a construction method that relies on weight and strength rather than mechanical anchors. Like the ancient pyramids, the wall is broad at its base, narrowing as it rises. Layer upon layer of stone, bound with concrete, forms a foundation designed for exceptional stability.
More than an engineering achievement, the Columbarium is a promise to future generations. Each niche provides a permanent place of remembrance where family members can return to honor loved ones, reflect on their legacy, and maintain a connection across the years.
Built of stone. Created for remembrance. Intended to endure.

Was the Columbarium really designed to last 1,000 years?
The goal was not a literal engineering guarantee but a design philosophy. The Cemetery wanted to build something as permanent as practical, using proven materials—stone, concrete, and gravity-wall construction. While no one can promise what the next millennium will bring, the Columbarium was built with the intention of serving families for generations to come.
Why does the Columbarium have a special retaining wall?
The retaining wall serves two purposes: it stabilizes the hillside where the first Wlaker Chapel stood, and provides a strong, permanent foundation for the three columbaria. Its gravity-wall design relies on mass and weight rather than mechanical anchors and rebar to provide long-term stability.
Why was so much stone used in the construction?
Large quantities of stone create a stable, long-lasting foundation. Stone is resistant to weather, insects, rot, and many of the issues that affect other building materials over time.
Are the columbaria above ground or below ground?
The columbaria are above ground and sit atop the gravity wall. Within the cemetery, they are easily accessible at ground level, allowing visitors to approach the niches comfortably. Permanent sitting is part of the design, so family and friends can stay as long as they wish.
Will the Columbarium require maintenance?
Like any structure, the Columbarium benefits from periodic inspection and care. The Chapel Cemetery Crew provides ongoing maintenance of the grounds and monitors the Columbarium to help preserve it for future generations.
Why was permanence such an important goal?
Families often seek a place that will remain available for children, grandchildren, and future descendants. The Columbarium was designed to provide a lasting location for remembrance, reflection, and family connection.
Who manufactured the Columbarium?
The three columbarium were designed and manufactured by Eickhof Columbaria. They have been designing and building America’s finest Columbaria since 1983. All designed and manufactured in Crookston, Minnesota, for cemeteries, churches, and mausoleums across the country.
