Inside and Out

A niche is more than a resting place—it is a permanent family gathering place, a legacy for generations to come.

Each niche provides a permanent place of remembrance within the peaceful setting of Walker Chapel Historic Cemetery. Behind each engraved granite faceplate rests the urn of a loved one whose story continues to be remembered.

Unlike scattering or ashes kept at home, a niche in the Columbarium provides a permanent place where loved ones may be honored, remembered, and visited. The engraved granite faceplate becomes a lasting memorial, while the surrounding gardens offer a peaceful setting for reflection and prayer.

Whether you choose a companion niche or a family niche, every niche receives the same care, dignity, and commitment to preservation that have characterized Walker Chapel Historic Cemetery for more than 150 years.

What is a niche?

A niche is a secure compartment within the Columbarium that holds one or more urns containing cremated remains. Each niche is covered by an engraved granite faceplate that serves as a permanent memorial.

What is the difference between a companion niche and a family niche?

A companion niche is designed to accommodate up to two urns, while a family niche can accommodate up to six urns, allowing multiple generations of a family to rest together.

May I reserve a niche before it is needed?

Yes. Many individuals and families choose to reserve a niche in advance, ensuring that their wishes are known and relieving loved ones of future decisions.

Must all urns be placed at the same time?

No. A niche may be reserved and used over time as family needs arise.  Many families select a companion or family niche specifically so loved ones may be together regardless of when their inurnments occur.

What type and size of urns are permitted?

Most standard cremation urns are permitted. Cemetery staff can help determine whether a particular urn will fit within the selected niche.  The companion niche is 11.5" wide, 11.5" deep, and 10.5" high.  The family niche is 23.5" wide.

What information is engraved on the granite faceplate?

Typically, the individual's name, dates of birth and death, and a short favorite saying are engraved on the faceplate. Details are discussed with the family during the inscription process.

May photographs or personal items be placed inside the niche?

Small memorial items may sometimes be placed inside a niche if space permits. Cemetery staff can provide guidance based on the niche selected.

Can I choose the location of my niche?

Yes. Available niches may be selected based on availability at the time of reservation.  See "Selecting a Niche" under the "The Steps" menu.

Are niches transferable?

Unused niches may be returned to the cemetery for a refund of the fee paid by the Licensee.

Is a niche a permanent resting place?

Yes. The Columbarium is intended to provide a permanent place of remembrance where family and friends may visit for many generations to come.

Who cares for the Columbarium and niches?

The Columbarium and surrounding grounds are lovingly maintained by Walker Chapel and the Chapel Cemetery Crew, ensuring a dignified and beautiful setting throughout the year.
